The South African wine industry is among the top ten largest in the world, and is also one of the oldest after Europe and the Mediterranean. Wine is one of South Africa’s largest agricultural export products, contributing a significant amount to the South African GDP. With such an opportunity for economic gain, it is no wonder that counterfeit wine has become a global multi-billion-dollar industry. Wine containing the best ingredients, or which is produced by traditional methods, or that originates from a certain geographical region, comes with a higher price tag. This leaves the door wide open for fraudsters to benefit from counterfeiting.
